Statement on May 18 Incident at Horizon Middle School
On Monday, May 18, at approximately 12:40 p.m., the Moorhead Police Department responded to Horizon Middle School after receiving a report that several students had become ill after consuming candy brought to school by another student. About ten students ate the candy, and some experienced nausea. School staff followed established safety protocols and contacted emergency medical personnel.
Two students were transported to a medical facility for evaluation. The remaining students were released to their parents or guardians.
Based on information gathered so far, the substance in the candy is believed to have contained THC. At this time, the students involved have not been cooperative with officers, limiting the ability to collect additional details. The investigation remains ongoing, and charges may be pursued if possible.
Chief Chris Helmick shared the following:
“This is a really unfortunate situation. As a parent with children in the MAPS system, I understand and relate to the concerns being raised within our community. The Moorhead Police Department will continue to work with Moorhead Area Public Schools as the incident is investigated and as efforts continue to identify ways to prevent similar situations in the future. Parents and guardians of children of all ages are strongly encouraged to speak with their kids about the importance of not consuming candy, food, or other items when they do not know exactly what they are.”
Initial information regarding this incident was provided to media yesterday. This notification is being issued today as part of an effort to be transparent with public communication.
Because the incident involves minors, no further student information will be released. The Moorhead Police Department will provide updates if additional information becomes available.
