    The City of Moorhead is accepting applications for a Fleet Maintenance Mechanic n the Public Works Department. This skilled trade position performs intermediate work maintaining and repairing City equipment and vehicles, implementing preventative maintenance programs and schedules, conducting vehicle and mechanical system analyses and inspections, maintaining files and records, and related work as required.

    HOURS: Monday-Friday 7:00am-3:30pm. No evenings. No weekends!

    HIRING RANGE: $30.65 to $31.87 per hour ($63,767 to $66,308). The full range goes to $43.13 per hour ($89,810).

    RAISES: Employees receive a raise (step increase) on their anniversary date each year.
    Plus this position also receives a 6% Cost of Living Adjustment (COLA) increase in January 2027 per the Union contract.

    ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    The essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to the following major duties performed. Duties are listed from most to least important.

    • Repairs City vehicles and equipment including street, fleet and sanitation equipment.
    • Repairs brakes, engine, electrical, fuel, hydraulic, transmission, ignition, air exhaust, axle assemblies and related systems.
    • Performs routine and preventive maintenance on such equipment as pumps, small engines, diesel and gas engines and powered equipment.
    • Maintains and implements preventative maintenance programs and schedules.
    • Rebuilds, sharpens and adjusts equipment parts; cuts and welds metal.
    • Conducts analyses and inspections of vehicles and mechanical systems.
    • Performs MnDOT inspections.
    • Diagnoses and determines repairs needed on vehicles and equipment and if required will:.
    • Coordinate with local vehicle/equipment maintenance shops to maintain/repair vehicles if needed.
    • Coordinate warranty work/repair with vendors.
    • Maintains and repairs shop equipment and tools.
    • Maintains appropriate files and records.
    • Operates diagnostic instruments along with hand, electric and air-driven tools.
    • Maintenance experience required with one or more of the following vehicle/equipment categories: sanitation equipment/trucks, heavy duty equipment/trucks and grounds maintenance equipment/trucks
    • Performs other duties as requested.
    • Attendance at off-site courses/trainings/seminars may be required.

    REQUIREMENTS
    • High school diploma or GED
    • One year experience in auto or diesel mechanic, or related field. Ideal candidate has an associate’s degree or certificate in auto or diesel mechanics
    • Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A within one year of hire.  Training provided!
    • Minnesota Commercial Vehicle Inspector within one year of hire. Training provided!

    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, and ABILITIES
    The Fleet Maintenance Mechanic requires thorough knowledge of automotive mechanics; thorough knowledge of gas and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulics, welding and small gasoline powered equipment; thorough knowledge of the type and uses of tools, supplies, equipment, procedures and techniques used in maintenance and repair; thorough knowledge of the safe use, operation and preventive maintenance of equipment used; thorough knowledge of the occupational hazards involved and the safety precautions necessary for the proper operation of equipment; skill in operating required tools and equipment; ability to read and interpret maintenance manuals and mechanical diagrams; ability to understand and follow oral and written directions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates and the general public

    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS and WORKING CONDITIONS
    The Fleet Maintenance Mechanic requires the frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work regularly requires standing, speaking or hearing, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling and reaching with hands and arms, frequently requires walking, pushing or pulling and lifting and occasionally requires sitting, tasting or smelling and repetitive motions; work has standard vision requirements; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; work requires visual inspection involving small defects and/or small parts, using of measuring devices, assembly or fabrication of parts within arms length, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities; work frequently requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to toxic or caustic chemicals, exposure to outdoor weather conditions and exposure to vibration and occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working in high, precarious places, exposure to extreme cold (non-weather), exposure to extreme heat (non-weather) and exposure to the risk of electrical shock; work is generally in a loud noise location (e.g. grounds maintenance, heavy traffic)
