Be Part of Something Bigger
Ryan | Public Works
The best part of my job is definitely my co-workers. We have lots of different personalities, but we all get along and work well together. The hours are great. We start early and get done early, so I have the rest of the day to do other stuff.
The pay is good, and the health insurance, especially family coverage, is better than most places. The amount of vacation we can accrue is generous and uncommon. It's nice to take time off for kids' activities.
Madison | City Clerk's Office
I really enjoy being able to help others and provide support to the community. My co-workers are the best part of the job. I'm grateful to be in such a positive environment.
We also get paid holidays, the benefits are great, scheduling is very flexible, training is pretty thorough, there is always someone there to answer questions and support you while doing your job and our supervisor is fantastic.
Brittany | City Planning
The best part of my job is getting to connect with people every day. I have been fortunate to have a lot of wonderful mentors at the City. My supervisor is very supportive. Her door is always open for questions. I appreciate that we have opportunities to attend training and they support our career development.
The most rewarding part of my job is when a project is completed and you see others excited about it; it’s very rewarding!
Blake | Public Works
Every project we complete is rewarding.
Two of the most rewarding parts of working streets construction for me are
- Snow events! When we work all night to clear snow so that the majority of roads are clear in the morning is very rewarding to know people are going to be safe when they drive to work. I really enjoy using the large equipment.
- Chip seal coat projects in the summer. There are a lot of moving parts and coordination with rollers, traffic controllers, etc. In 2025 we will have completed about 215,000 square yards of roads which helps extend the life of the road so they don’t wear out as fast.
I also appreciate a reliable schedule and weekends off in the summer and the City has great benefits and the pension is really good too. I have a supportive supervisor and we have a great team in the Streets Department.
Shawn | Police Officer - Patrol
I enjoy the freedom of seeing something new and different every day I come to work. My office is my patrol vehicle; it allows me to work in a controlled work setting without interruptions throughout my workday. I enjoy working my beat and building relationships with those within the community. The benefits are great and I enjoy shift work. Working at the City level is rewarding in the sense that you are held to a higher standard than most jobs. If you are looking for a challenge police work may be for you.
Ryan | Firefighter
The best part of my job is helping people in their time of need, and the teamwork—everything we do, depends on it. I also enjoy preparing new firefighters as one of several trainers through the Joint Metro Fire Academy.
I value the department training and outside training opportunities we get to attend. Our schedule and vacation time are great benefits, along with the strong team atmosphere that makes the fire department feel like a second family.
Mike | Police Investigations Lieutenant
The people I work with in the City and across the region with our outside agency partnerships make this a great place to work. It's great to be part of a larger team that all play a role in making Moorhead great, whether that's the crew from Sanitation picking up trash, Moorhead Public Service working with us to keep residents safe, the crew mowing and beatifying our city, human resources keeping our staff informed and hiring to fill openings, to the fire department working scenes with us. We're all working to make this city a great community to work, live and grow in!
If you are ambitious, there are endless opportunities to grow personally and professionally and a variety of schedules to fit different stages of life.
Amy | Engineering
I really love the people I work with and serving the public. When you have a good team, work doesn't feel like work.
We get our work done, but have fun at the same time. We lean on each other, celebrating life's milestones and grieving our losses. I feel blessed that I have a great management team with strong leadership skills. I know I'm appreciated for the work I do, and I'm encouraged to improve myself through further training. We have very good benefits, but even more than benefits, I really appreciate that they understand a work/family life balance.
